UV radiation warning sign inside a sunbed room, highlighting the risks of UV exposure and skin damag.
28 May 2026

Efforts to strengthen regulation of commercial sunbeds in England are underway...take part in the survey !

Sunbed use is associated with a range of health risks, including skin cancer (see our info page here). The risk is particularly high in younger people, with research suggesting that using a sunbed before the age of 20 increases the risk of developing melanoma by 47% compared to those who have never used one.

The consultation survey seeks views on a range of measures to strengthen existing protections to allow people to make informed decisions about sunbed use.

Our advice in line with our clinical advisors and healthcare professionals is simple… please don’t use sunbeds, avoid them completely !

The DHSC consultation document can be found here . If you would like to complete the survey to add your view… please click on the survey link here.

Please note the consultation is open for 12 weeks and  closes on 14th August 2026
