David is Running the 2024 Porto Marathon

I am running my inaugural and only marathon in memory of my father, Nick who died in very difficult circumstances nearly a year ago to the day. Following a CT scan in late April 2023, Dad was diagnosed with multiple metastatic brain tumours as a result of a Melanoma skin cancer. He had kept his Melanoma diagnosis in 2019 from me so this came as a devastating shock. I had no idea skin cancer could spread to the brain and will never forget being in hospital with him.

The following months were extremely traumatic for our family as Dad went through full body Radiotherapy treatment at Addenbrooke's Hospital and as we all cared for Dad at home during his last days. Knowing his love for our children and the fact he is missing out on their upbringing is very painful for us all. He had recently retired and was looking forward to winding down with Mum at our family home in Northern Portugal; he loved spending time with us all there.

Given the dignity and courage he showed throughout his prognosis, his devotion to our family and Dad's love of Portugal, it seemed fitting for me to take on an appropriate challenge. In tribute to him and as I approach a milestone birthday next year, I felt it was 'now or never' to run the 2024 Porto Marathon. It seemed a good idea in August..

The training has at times been quite arduous and anti-social, with early Sunday morning starts, drivers forcing me off the road, various niggling injuries and the worst 'chafe' experience you can imagine...I have made it this far, however, and I am appealing to you so we can raise much-needed funds for Melanoma UK who continue to support patients and families affected by this disease.

If you could spare the price of a coffee, wine or beer to help me raise funds and awareness of Melanoma, I would be very grateful. I intend to have a SuperBock or two after the marathon itself!
